Transforming classic cars into electric vehicles is a sensitive topic for purist enthusiasts who want to preserve old cars with their original combustion powertrains intact. However, despite not agreeing with all classic car EV conversions, some make more sense than others, and this early 1990s Ford Mustang Foxbody may be one of them. The third-generation Mustang built on the Fox platform made its debut in 1978 and continued production until 1993. While more popular than its streamlined and underpowered second-generation counterpart, by modern standards, the performance of this car might not be considered fast. If your Fox Mustang doesn’t have the V8 5.0-liter or turbo four-cylinder 2.3-liter engine under the hood, it likely takes more than 10 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph. The Mustang conversion featured in a video by The Racing Channel by FuelTech in Georgia addresses the original manual gearbox, adding driving pleasure without increasing the car’s weight. Despite removing the heavy engine during an EV conversion, this modification is about 50 pounds lighter than the stock version. With over 500 horsepower and 700 pound-feet of torque, the converted Mustang feels like a rocket ship. While the stock transmission may fail to handle the torque, the makers intend to maintain the car’s manual character by fitting a new transmission when necessary. By distributing the battery pack (with unspecified capacity) partially at the front and rear of the car, the weight balance between the two axles is maintained. Driving the converted Mustang retains the use of gears like a traditional car, providing an engaging experience for careful drivers. Despite not needing a manual transmission in an electric vehicle, the reassurance of changing gears adds allure for the driver. Future conversions like this may become more common due to their simplicity in retaining original mechanical components while providing a modern driving experience.
